Already adapted as a two-part feature film, the acclaimed manga “Dead Dead Demons Dededede Destruction” is to be made available worldwide as an animated TV series on Crunchyroll later this week.
The two-part feature film, distributed by Gaga Corp., has only been released in Japan – part one debuted in Japan in March, while part two will open on May 24.
The film content, complemented by new footage not seen in the theatrical features, will be screened as an 18-part TV series. Starting from May 23, episodes will upload every Thursday evening Los Angeles time (or Friday May 24, Japan time).

The underlying manga is based on a graphic novel by Asano Inio (“Goodnight Punpun”) and was published by Shogakukan between 2014 and 2022, with over three million copies in circulation. It was recognized as one of the year’s best new manga at the 2018 San Diego Comic-Con and was nominated for an Eisner Award in 2019.

The tale is a dystopian sci-fi story that starts with third-year high school students Koyama Kadode and Nakagawa Oran, aka Ontan. As the world is threatened by the sudden appearance of a mysterious alien mothership above Tokyo, the best friends try to carry on much as normal. But as they grow up, they face existential questions, learning adulthood’s complexities and that the true threat may not be from above.
The anime is produced by studio Production +h. (“The Orbital Children”) and directed by Kurokawa Tomoyuki who is best known for his work on the “Psycho Pass” series. The series composition and screenplay were written by Yoshida Reiko (“Violet Evergarden” series, “Liz and the Blue Bird,” “A Silent Voice”).
The series stars lead voice performances by Ikuta Lilas (Hiro-chan in “Belle”) as Koyama Kadode) Ikuta is also known as ikura, a singer-songwriter and vocalist of the popular music group Yoasobi, whose songs include the global phenomenon “Idol” from the anime series “[Oshi no Ko],” “Brave” from the anime series “Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End” and “The Blessing” from the anime series “Mobile Suit Gundam the Witch from Mercury.”
Ano, who plays Ontan, is a multi-talented voice actor with credits including [Oshi no Ko]). She is also a musical artist whose single “Chu, Tayousei” is one of the theme songs in the anime series “Chainsaw Man.”
The supporting voice cast includes: Tanezaki Atsumi as Kurihara Kiho; Shimabukuro Miyuri as Demoto Ai; Oki Saeko as Hirama Rin; Waki Azumi as Takemoto Futaba; Shiraishi Ryoko as Tainuma Makoto; Irino Miyu as Oba Keita; Uchiyama Koki as Kohiruimaki Kenichi; Ban Taito as Watarase; Suwabe Junichi as Nakagawa Hiroshi; Tsuda Kenjiro as Koyama Nobuo; Takenaka Naoto as Chairman; Tarako as Debeko; and Sugita Tomokazu as Isobeyan.
Other production staff include: world design and setting by Suzuki Takaaki (“Violet Evergarden”); character design and chief animation direction by Ito Nobutake (“Inu-Oh”); color design by Takezawa Satoshi (“Digimon Adventure”); art direction by Nishimura Mika (“Typhoon Noruda”); CG direction by Inami Satoi; cinematography by Morooka Takuma (“Moriarty the Patriot”); editing by Kurosawa Masayuki (“Laid-Back Camp” series); sound direction by Takadera Takeshi (“[Oshi no Ko]”); and music composed by Umebayashi Taro (“Space Dandy”).
The original movie theme song “ZeZeZeZettai Seiiki” performed by ano and featuring Ikuta will also be a part of the new television version.
