It’s hard to believe that it’s been 20 years since Paris Hilton and bestie Nicole Richie burst onto TV screens with “The Simple Life,” but as Hilton will tell you, time really does fly by when you’re having fun.
The reality star-turned-entrepreneur took to Instagram Sunday to mark the 20th anniversary of the hit reality series, which followed her and Richie as they traded in their glamorous lives in L.A. for menial jobs and hijinks in small towns across America. In a carousel post featuring promo images from the five seasons of the show, Hilton wrote that filming “The Simple Life” was “one of the most special, hilarious and iconic times in my life.”

“The Simple Life” premiered on FOX on December 2, 2003 and became an instant hit, at one point bringing in more than 13 million viewers a week. Considered by many as one of the first non-competition reality shows to break through with audiences, “The Simple Life” eventually ran for five seasons — first on FOX and then on E! — ending in 2007. By then, Hilton and Richie had become household names (not to mention tabloid fixtures) and both were able to use the show — and their newfound notoriety — as platforms to launch other businesses, shows and endeavors (Hilton was recently named one of Variety’s “40 Most Powerful Women in Reality TV“).
While Richie has yet to comment on the “Simple Life” anniversary as of this article’s writing, Hilton recently teased on Bravo’s “Watch What Happens Live” that her and Richie “have been talking” and that they may “have some surprises in store.”
“I can’t believe it’s going to be the 20-year anniversary,” Hilton told host Andy Cohen. “It just feels like yesterday.”
